ESSENTIAL OILS FOR YOUR DOG, LIST AND REMEDIES

Dogies,  Dogies,  Dogies,  Dogies

THE FAMILIES BEST FRIEND

Did you know you can treat your dog with essential oils much like you use them for yourself and your family?  You can!

Dogs tolerate EOs very well but just as humans vary in size, age and doses, so it is with dogs too.  Dogs can be treated aromatically, topically and internally.  When applying topically, a great choice is to massage oils into pads of paws and between toes.

This sounds wonderful.

Strawberry Butter

Strawberry Butter

I LOVE strawberry butter and it is good for me!
I found this version at the lunch box bunch blog and it is perfect!
5 Tbsp virgin coconut oil
5-6 strawberries
pinch salt
2 tsp maple or agave syrup

To Make: Add all ingredients to a blender or food processor and blend until creamy. Spoon mixture out into freezer-friendly container. Place in the freezer for at least ten minutes - longer for firmer spread - serve. The spread should be served firm yet spreadable. Place back in fridge to store. Use within a few days.

* Do not blend coconut oil with slightly cold or chilled liquids or you will be left with bead-y, clumpy butter. Room temperature to warm liquids work best.

* If you get stuck blending smoothly, add a few splashes of warm water.  You can use refined or unrefined coconut oil. Refined has a stronger coconut essence.
* Always use coconut oil that has been warmed to room temperature - or slightly softer - for easiest blending.
* For a "lower in fat" spread - add in a few tablespoons of non-dairy milk (warm in microwave before adding.) The butter will still firm up nicely, but be a tad less "oily." You can also add in other "fillers" like silken tofu, soy cream cheese, nuts, nut butters, avocado, creamy fruits and more. So many options!!

* If making ahead of time - allow at least 10-20 minutes for coconut butter to soften to room temp before spreading-. this avoids "waxy" spread. Try warming in microwave if needed.

Other flavor ideas:  banana, cacao, goji berry, peanut butter fudge….

HOMEMADE BUTTER

This is something that I have wanted to try.   Have to add it to my "To Try" list along with all the other million ideas to make, cook, sew, plant, heal, and ....................   Oh my, I better get busy!

Our First Batch o’ Butter!

We love butter!  I’ve been wanting to make my own for a long time.  Finally…. I’ve done it!
make real butter
I used about 1 1/2 – 2 cups heavy cream in my Kitchen Aide mixer with the wire whisk attachment. (truthfully, I’m guessing… I forgot to measure it.)
mixer wire whip
Start the mixer, slowly at first while you carefully drape a towel over the mixer.  Be very, very careful not to allow the towel to get hung up on any turning mechanisms!  Or if you happen to own one of those handy Kitchen Aide splash guards, then use that.  But you’ll probaly want something because when you slide the speed lever up to 8-10, it will begin to splash all over!  Trust me on this.
towel mixer
Let it run at high speed until the milk “breaks” and starts to form clots.  When that happens, you’ll want to take the wire whisk off and use the beater attachment.  Otherwise the butter ball will form inside the wire whisk. Use the beater attachment and mix for just a couple more minutes or until you think all the butter has formed.
beater blade butter
Next, I used a large slotted spoon to fish out the butter chunks.  Then I drained the buttermilk into a clean jar to deal with later.   Or, I may just drink it!  I put the butter ball into my special wooden butter bowl with the hand-carved paddle.
butter bowl and paddle
My mother gave me this butter bowl & paddle. The paddle is hand-carved, fits my hand perfectly, and was passed down through the family from my great-great grandfather on my father’s mother’s side.  My mother bought the wooden bowl from an Amish store in Kansas in about 1964.  I’m so honored to be able to carry on a family tradition and teach my children to make things from scratch using heirloom tools.  I cherish them both and one day, I’ll hand them down to the next generation.
Now you want to rinse the butter to get all of the buttermilk out.  The butter keeps longer if its rinsed well.  I rinsed this batch with really cold water, mashing the water through the butter with the paddle and working it around the bowl.  When the water comes clear, gather the butter into a ball and put it in a container in the fridge.  My daughters actually clapped and cheered when they saw the homemade butter.  Now they’re expectinghomemade bread too!
Finished Butter
I’m keeping my eyes out at garage and estate sales for old wooden butter molds.  I’d love to make enough butter to mold, then store in the freezer. In the meantime, I doubt this little batch will last long enough to worry about molding, especially with Saturday morning pancakes on the horizon.

ESSENTIAL OIL TIP

Essential Oil Tips: Clear Skin

Happy Thursday, everyone! For today's essential oil tip, I thought I'd talk about DoTERRA's Clear Skin Essential Oil Blend.  This blend contains rosewood oil, melaleuca, eucalyptus globulus, geranium, and lemongrass essential oils, along with black cumin seed oil.  These oils were chosen for their unique abilities to help protect the skin from bacterial and fungal growth and from other skin issues like eczema and acne.

I want to talk about some of the properties of each of the oils in this blend.

Rosewood oil is antiseptic, it works well to help clear infections and it also helps revitalize the skin.

Melaleuca, I just talked about last week, but in short it's antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and helps support the skin in the recovery process after injury.

Eucalyptus glubulus is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal.  It's been used medically in France to treat candida and other fungal infections.

Geranium is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, it also is widely used to help alleviate acne and eczema.  It also helps balance sebum (the oily/waxy matter we produce to protect our skin and hair) levels.

Lemongrass is antiseptic, it helps clear infections and revitalizes skin tissue.

Black Cumin Seed Oil has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  It also has a high level of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that is needed for healthy skin and hair. Linoleic acid also helps reduce acne, and helps with wound healing.

So, what skin issues can you use it for?  Well, pretty much any and all issues relating to your skin.  Some examples include: Acne, Athlete's Foot, Callouses, Dermatitis, Facial Blemishes, Impetigo, Itchy Scalp, Infected Nails, Oily Skin, Toe Nail Fungus, and Skin Lesions.

To use it is simple, just apply topically on area of concern, dilute if needed.
